At right, ashes collect on a Pasadena car door. Bobcat Fire photo credit: Derek Stevenson, Nosnevets Productions.According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, smoke from the Bobcat Fire burning in the region has caused unhealthy air quality in the greater Pasadena area.“It is difficult to tell where smoke, ash or soot from a fire will go, or how winds will affect the level of these particles in the air, so we ask everyone to remember that smoke and ash can be harmful to health, even for people who are healthy,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Health Officer for Los Angeles County. “If you can see smoke, soot, or ash, or you can smell smoke, pay attention to your immediate environment and take precautions to safeguard your health. These precautions are particularly important for children, older adults, and people with heart or lung diseases.”These precautions include avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure and limiting physical exertion (whether indoor or outdoor), such as exercise. Children and people who have air quality sensitive conditions, such as heart disease, asthma, and other chronic respiratory diseases, should follow these recommendations and stay indoors as much as possible even in areas where smoke, soot, or ash cannot be seen, or there is no smell of smoke. If your condition worsens, contact your health care provider immediately for medical advice or call 911.Wildfire smoke is a mixture of small particles, gases, and water vapor. Small particles are the primary health concern. These small particles can cause burning eyes, runny nose, scratchy throat, headaches, and illness (i.e., bronchitis). In people with sensitive conditions, they can cause difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, fatigue, and chest pain.“We are also advising day camps that are in session in smoke-impacted areas to suspend outside recreational activities, such as hiking or picnics, until conditions improve,” said Dr. Davis.People can participate in indoor activities in areas with visible smoke, soot, or ash, provided the indoor location has air conditioning that does not draw air from the outside, and it has closed windows and doors to protect the cleanliness of indoor air.If not, it is recommended that everyone follow these guidelines as if they were outside.• If you see or smell smoke, or see a lot of particles and ash in the air, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity to limit your exposure to harmful air. This is especially important for those with heart or lung disease (including asthma), the elderly and children.• If outdoor air is bad, try to keep indoor air as clean as possible by keeping windows and doors closed. Air conditioners that re-circulate air within the home can help filter out harmful particles.• Avoid using air conditioning units that only draw in air from the outside or that do not have a re-circulating option. Residents should check the filters on their air conditioners and replace them regularly. Indoor air filtration devices with HEPA filters can further reduce the level of particles that circulate indoors.• If it is too hot during the day to keep the doors or windows closed and you do not have an air conditioning unit that re-circulates indoor air, consider going to an air-conditioned place, such as a cooling center, to stay cool and to protect yourself from harmful air.• Do not use fireplaces (either wood burning or gas), candles, and vacuums. Use damp cloths to clean dusty indoor surfaces. Do not smoke.• If you have symptoms of lung or heart disease that may be related to smoke exposure, including severe coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain, palpitations, nausea or unusual fatigue or lightheadedness, contact your doctor immediately or go to an urgent care center. If life- threatening, please contact 911.• When smoke is heavy for a prolonged period of time, fine particles can build up indoors even though you may not be able to see them. Wearing a mask may prevent exposures to large particles. However, most masks do not prevent exposure to fine particles and toxic gases, which may be more dangerous to your health.• Practice safe clean-up following a fire. Follow the ash clean-up and food safety instructions at: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/docs/ReturningHomeAfterAFire.pdfThe following is recommended for pets:• Avoid leaving your pets outdoors, particularly at night. Pets should be brought into an indoor location, such as an enclosed garage or a house.• If dogs or cats appear to be in respiratory distress, they should be taken to an animal hospital immediately. Symptoms of respiratory distress for dogs include panting or an inability to catch their breath. Symptoms for cats are less noticeable, but may include panting or an inability to catch their breath. The Department of Public Health is committed to protecting and improving the health of over 10 million residents of Los Angeles County. SACKED—Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Andy Dalton is sacked by Steelers linebacker Lamar Woodley in their game on Sunday, Dec. 23, at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. (Courier Photo/Thomas Sabol)In one of many terrible games this season the Steelers offense once again didn’t show up and despite a valiant effort by the defense, the Cincinnati Bengals knocked Pittsburgh out of the playoffs 13-10, making this weekend’s game against Cleveland, 5-10, critical. Why? Because the loss dropped the Steelers below the 500 mark at 7-8 which means a loss to the lowly Browns would give Coach Mike Tomlin his first losing season at 7-9 and the Steelers first losing record since 2003 when they finished 6-10 under Bill Cower. The Browns, after playing three outstanding games have fallen back to their old selves as they lost to the Denver Broncos 34-12. With a new owner, the future of the coaching staff and general manager is in question in Cleveland, which means everyone, including all the players, will be playing for either a job in Cleveland next year or someplace in the NFL.Brandon Weeden, the starting quarterback, completed his first season as the starter, but hasn’t established himself enough to know if he will start next season. They most likely will draft a quarterback in the first round.Trent Richardson is their top running back leading the team with 953 yards with a 3.6 average, with Josh Gordon, 46 catches for 766 yards, and Greg Little, 50 catches for 609 yards being their top receivers. The Steelers have played down to their opponents all year, but against the Bengals the defense was able to hold rising young Quarterback Andy Dalton in check most of the game despite an outstanding game from another bright young player A. J. Green who had 116 yards on 10 catches after only one reception in the previous meeting between these two rivals. The running game was completely shut down with BenJarvus Green-Ellis being held to only 14 yards on 15 carries. But as it has occurred for most of this season the offense could not put points on the board as they continued to go one, two, three out on most of their possessions.Ben Roethlisberger criticized the play calling after losing to the San Diego Chargers, but the only person he can blame this game on is himself. The loss generated many, many questions as to who will be back next season, and what will be done to turn around an extremely talented team that should have been challenging for a Super Bowl, but instead will have to win this weekend to keep from falling below 500. This is a team that has looked terrible against some of the weakest teams in the league.A huge change was made at the end of last season in an effort to correct the offensive problem and protect Roethlisberger by not renewing Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians’ contract. But it appears that he wasn’t the sole reason for the lack of offense. So even though the Steelers have one big game left to keep from falling below 500, you better believe they are already looking toward next season.

13 December 2007Tyco Telecommunications has announced that it has started construction on the US$650-million Seacom undersea fibre-optic cable, which will link southern and eastern Africa with India and Europe by 2009, bringing down connectivity costs on the continent.“Seacom’s offerings will complement communication carriers of south and east africa through the sale of wholesale international capacity to global networks eastward through India and westward through Europe,” Tyco said in a statement on Wednesday.“The system will provide African retail carriers with equal and open access to inexpensive bandwidth, removing the international infrastructure bottleneck and supporting east and south African economic growth.”According to Tyco, the increased capacity of the cable as compared to existing infrastructure will enable the greater availability and lower cost of high-demand services such as high definition television (HDTV), peer to peer networks and internet protocol television (IPTV).Majority African ownedSouth African companies will own half of the private equity funded Seacom undersea fibre-optic cable, with total African ownership of the cable to reach 75%.The future of the 15 000km SEA Cable System (Seacom) was previously in doubt when Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced that any cable landing in the country would have to be majority South African owned.Business Day reported in November that local investment company VenFin was putting in $75-million for a 25% stake in the project, while black economic empowerment companies Shanduka and Convergence Partners were each taking a 12.5% stake worth $37.5-million.The paper added that Industrial Promotion Services, a unit of Kenya-based development agency the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, had also taken a 25% stake in the cable, making it majority-owned by African investors. The group had already awarded a $10-million marine survey and engineering contract to American-based Tyco Telecommunications.“East and South African user demand for international bandwidth, whether for business, institution or individual use, has greatly surpassed the existing supply,” Herakles Telecom vice president Brian Herlihy said in the statement by Tyco. “Seacom, as an international submarine cable system, will provide significant supply at affordable prices.”According to Business Day, New York-based Herakles Telecom is a development group that has invested some $4-billion in Africa, and owns 25% of the cable.South Africa’s second national operator, Neotel, is not part of the cable-building consortium, but owns the landing rights as part of its licence and will contribute R20-million toward the project, with funds going toward the cable landing station and all related facilities within South African territory.‘Cable a success story’“We are particularly excited that the South African investors in Seacom have a 50% stake, making this [cable] one of the country’s success stories”, Neotel managing director Ajay Pandey said in a company statement.Seacom will have a capacity of 1.28 terabits per second, which is approximately 10 times the current capacity of the SAT-3 cable which runs along Africa’s west coast and connects South Africa to Europe.According to Neotel, the cable should be ready for service during 2009, placing South Africa in a much stronger position to support the 2010 Fifa World Cup, whose demand for international bandwidth, and in particular high definition television broadcasting, will be unprecedented. In addition, Neotel states it will operate the local landing station and facilities on an open access basis, thus stimulating the country’s international bandwidth market.“Neotel remains committed to a new era in the telecoms industry of South Africa where access to international bandwidth will not be as constrained.” Pandey said.SAinfo reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo material

We also arranged the very successful parade through the streets of Sandton two days before kick-off. Beijing: China said on Tuesday that Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes will not be allowed to fly until their security is guaranteed, as it ruled out any politics behind its decision to ground nearly 100 such aircraft after the deadly Ethiopian Airlines crash. China’s civil aviation regulator on Monday ordered domestic carriers to ground all Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, citing flight safety, a day after an aircraft of similar model operated by the Ethiopian Airlines crashed in Addis Ababa killing all 157 passengers and crew, including 10 Indians and Indian-origin Canadians. The crash of Ethiopian Airlines plane came five months after another Boeing 737 MAX 8 of Lion Air crashed in Indonesia that killed 189 passengers and crew. Reports said there were similarities between the Ethiopian and Indonesian air crashes as they both occurred during take-off, involving new aircraft that had just been delivered. Apart from China, Indonesia and Ethiopia have also ordered the airlines to ground their Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes. “As for China, the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has said that they will stay in touch with the US and Boeing,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a media briefing here. After guaranteeing the security of the aircraft, they will resume operations. So we don’t have a time table yet. “Only after we confirm that there is no risk for security can we resume their operation. It is shows our sense of responsibility for passenger safety,” he said. In a bid to rule out any politics behind China’s decision, Lu pointed to several other countries and airlines that have grounded the particular aircraft after Sunday’s accident due to safety concerns. “First I want to emphasise not only the CAAC but also many countries in the world and regions are grounding the commercial operations of this aircraft after the accident,” he said. China and the US, the world’s two largest economies, are locked in a trade war since Trump imposed heavy tariffs on imported steel and aluminium items from China in March last year, a move that sparked fears of a global trade war. Trump imposed tariff hikes of up to 25 per cent on USD 250 billion of Chinese goods. In response, China imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on USD 110 billion of American goods. Top trade officials from America and China are holding talks to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal.
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court Friday said political parties and their bosses should show “maturity” and ensure that there are no obstacles in the probe into the killings of rationalists Narendra Dabhoklar and Govind Pansare.”Voice of dissent” must not be muffled, a division bench headed by Justice S C Dharmadhikari said while hearing petitions filed by family members of Dabholkar and Pansare demanding an HC-monitored probe. Dabholkar, a well-known anti-superstition activist, was shot dead on August 20, 2013 in Pune. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of state police are probing the killings of Dabholkar and Pansare, respectively. The high court Friday said that the state government should provide all “ground-level assistance” for the probe. “No one should attempt to silence any voice of dissent. That should be our endeavour. We expect all political parties and their bosses to show maturity and not create obstacles in the investigation,” Justice Dharmadhikari said. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K”All political parties, those who are in power now and in future, should ensure that no outfit or person involved in such attacks is spared,” the judge added. The court directed the additional chief secretary of the state Home Department and the principal secretaries of the state Finance and Public Works departments to hold meetings with CBI and CID officials. “The state shall provide ground-level assistance if the CBI proposes to carry out any major operation,” it said. The judges also wondered why the government and the CBI were waiting for its orders to carry out the probe. “When a similar attack was carried out in Karnataka on writer Gauri Lankesh (in 2017), the police there immediately probed and arrested the accused without waiting for court orders or for any petitions to be filed,” the court said.
