Yu Darvish’s World Series Game 7 start is a disaster for Dodgers

first_img Miller: An appreciation for a Dodgers team that delivered everything but what mattered most Photos: Dodgers vs. Astros, World Series Game 7 LOS ANGELES — Yu Darvish blew his chance at redemption. In what might have been his final game as a Dodger, Darvish allowed five runs in 1⅔ innings Wednesday against the Houston Astros in a do-or-die Game 7 of the World Series.Darvish was facing the Astros for the second time in the World Series, trying to atone for a 1⅔-inning start in Game 3 in Houston. That was the shortest start of Darvish’s major league career, which began in 2012. In a game the Dodgers couldn’t lose, Darvish matched his own record for futility.Related Articles Dodgers fan: ‘L.A. is heartbroken’ It was clear from the outset that Darvish was not in peak form. He allowed a double to the game’s first batter, George Springer. Down 2-0 in the second inning, Darvish walked Brian McCann and allowed a double to Marwin Gonzalez before Springer homered to left-center field. Pitcher Brandon Morrow, who appeared in every game of the World Series, was summoned from the bullpen and got the final out of the second inning.“I know he wanted the baseball. I know he was prepared. I just can’t explain the results. I really can’t,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game.Roberts said he has no regrets leaving Darvish in.“You look up to that point, there were two balls that were hit hard. There was the first ball off Springer’s bat, the double, and then Gonzalez – outside of that we made an error, the stolen base, and then some soft grounders. I think anything but the homer you’ve got to kind of let the game (unfold) –I understand it’s Game 7, but I just felt his stuff was good,” Roberts said. For Darvish, it was a bitter end to his three-month tenure in Los Angeles. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Acquired in a blockbuster deadline trade for Willie Calhoun and two other prospects, Darvish offered glimpses of greatness and frustration in 13 starts as a Dodger. After a shaky beginning in which he toyed with his mechanics from start to start, Darvish settled in by the end of September. He allowed only two runs in his final three regular-season starts. That success carried over to the postseason. Darvish was the winning pitcher in an NLDS-clinching Game 3 in Arizona, and in a decisive NLCS Game 3 in Chicago. But in two starts against the Astros, Darvish was unrecognizable. His first two World Series starts left him with a 21.60 earned-run average in the Fall Classic. He threw 96 pitches and induced just four swings and misses.“From the last outing I learned and I tried to make adjustments going towards today’s outing,” Darvish said through a translator. “The last outing my breaking ball, especially slider, wasn’t that good or sharp. So I was trying to make adjustments between outings. And today I was able to throw it for strikes, but it didn’t get to the level that I wanted it to be, which is dominating.”Credit the Astros hitters for staying disciplined and taking advantage of opportunities.“When you’re going to face a high-end pitcher, and even though we beat him up a little bit twice this series, it is not going to take away how good he is,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’ve seen him a lot in Texas and obviously he’s a difficult pitcher. You have to pick a pitch. You have to find an area of the zone that you feel comfortable with and stay in the strike zone the most you can.“If he gets you to chase, it’s advantage Darvish. If he gets you to hit his off-speed pitches, it’s advantage Darvish. So you have to be very disciplined. And we did that two games in a row where we got hittable pitches and did damage.”Darvish will be a free agent this winter.
