first_imgSINN Féin TDs Deputies Pearse Doherty, and Pádraig MacLochlainn have today  renewed their calls on Health Minister Leo Varadkar to urgently act to resolve the overcrowding situation at Letterkenny General Hospital before lives are lost as a result. The Donegal TDs made the comments after Management at the Hospital were today again forced to issue a statement to Donegal Daily advising members of the public not to attend the unit’s Emergency Department if at all possible and to instead contact their GP.The statement from Hospital Management also stated that due to ‘above average’ admissions there were 31 people awaiting a bed at the unit. “The situation which presents itself at Letterkenny General Hospital’s Emergency Department is one of sheer chaos. It was only last week when we saw the hospital thrown into the depths of an overcrowding crisis in which hospital staff struggled to contend with high patient numbers – now, as incomprehensible as it may seem, we find ourselves back to square one”, said Deputy MacLochlainn.“I have raised the overcrowding crisis at Letterkenny General Hospital with the Health Minister on the Dáil floor; I have repeatedly spoken out about it in the media, and despite assurances from the Minister last October that he would look into the matter, the situation has continued to worsen”, added Deputy Doherty.“Is it going to take the loss of human life before the Government finally wake up and realise that our hospitals are simply unable to cope with the demands which are being placed upon them? – I’m sorry to have to say that it appears that this is the direction in which we are heading”, Deputy Doherty continued.Summing up this latest crisis to hit the hospital, Pádraig MacLochlainn stated that a lack of resources was to blame. “What has caused this latest crisis at the facility is quite simple; this is down to inadequate resources and dangerously low staffing levels,” he said.“Today there are currently 31 people awaiting a bed in Letterkenny General Hospital, while all non-emergency surgery has had to be delayed – this is not good enough.“Deputy Doherty and I are urging the Health Minister to act swiftly in order to resolve this mayhem because – as things stand – lives are now being put at risk.” TDs ANGER AT LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL CRISIS: “LIVES WILL BE LOST” was last modified: January 13th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:healthLEO VARADKARletterkenny hospitalPADRAIG MACLOCHLAINNPearse Doherty TDlast_img read more
