DONEGAL SCHOOL TO TAKE A VOW OF SILENCE THIS FRIDAY!

first_imgIf you are to visit Loreto Community School in Milford this Friday the 20th of March, you may come to the conclusion that the establishment is full of rude senior students who refuse to speak to visitors. How wrong you would be!The concept of a “day of silence” first came about at a prefect meeting while discussing ideas for a fundraiser. Loreto has built up a name for its successful fundraisers in the past: the twister game which was played by whole year groups simultaneously and “Crazy Hair Day” remain among the most memorable events in the hearts of the students. Each year, fifth year students are given the opportunity to host a fundraiser of their own, and donate to a cause close to their hearts.Last year, the 12 hour cycleathon raised thousands of euro which benefited local charities in our own community. It was evident that topping last years fundraiser would be nothing short of a miracle as last years group came together as one to be so successful. A fundraiser both innovative and unique would be required. And a day of silence ticked both the boxes. “Not only is the idea different, it has symbolic relevance too” explains Nora Doherty, Head Girl of the school.“After a short discussion, we decided we would like to donate funds raised to a local charity for mental health (Jigsaw in Letterkenny), which tied in wonderfully with the concept of the day of silence. We acknowledge that the day is going to be exceedingly difficult, as talking is in our nature, but throughout the day we intend to recall that often people feel this pain for years on end, silenced by their own minds or otherwise.“The difficulties we will have for the day are nothing compared to the internal torment that some people experience, and as such we expect every student in the year will take the challenge very seriously. As well as raising money for a worthy cause, we will be able to get a glimpse of the struggle which some people have on a daily basis.”As it is such a novel idea, the day of silence has been the talking point of the school over the past few weeks, as students and staff alike wait in eager anticipation.Even the organisation of such a simple event took time and thought. At lunchtime it is hoped a film will be shown for fifth year students as sitting in the school canteen surrounded by other people talking may prove too tempting for some people. Workshops have also been arranged for each class group so as to increase awareness of the cause to which we are donating.“Given all the hype surrounding the event, the day of silence is set to go down in history as one of the most memorable fifth year fundraisers. We hope the local community will join in and support us, as the money raised will benefit people around us. If anyone wishes to donate, they should contact any fifth year or prefect member.”So this Friday if you’re admiring the solar eclipse at awe in the early morning, spare a thought for the fifth years from Loreto who will be equally as amazed but forced to express that amazement into themselves.DONEGAL SCHOOL TO TAKE A VOW OF SILENCE THIS FRIDAY! was last modified: March 18th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
