‘Liberia Must Celebrate Atty. Allison‘s Death’

first_imgFollowing what many in the public have described as the late Atty. Michael Allison’s brave actions that led to a full-scale investigation of the National Legislature’s handling of the oil consultation process by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) the deceased deserves to be celebrated, his family and friends have recommended.Allison who was hired as legal petroleum consultant by the National Legislature was discovered dead on February 13, at a local beach in Monrovia, days after he raised an alarm over his pay check. But, a statement released by the family and friends of the late Atty. Allison, a copy of which is with the Daily Observer, noted that he “was a whistle blower who exposed attempts by some individuals in high places to deny and deprive the Liberian people of their just benefits in the exploration of oil.“We believe that the act of bravery and courage by this one individual must be celebrated and his subsequent death as the result of this act must claim the attention, interest and action of all Liberians.”Defending their recommendation, the group further noted that his whistle blowing should serve as a platform for the Public Procurement and Concession Commission (PPCC), the General Auditing Commission (GAC) and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate and audit all procurements, sales and proceeds of oil blocks and their benefits.Given the level of disagreement and revelation associated with the Legislature, the family and friends recommended “an audit of various budgetary, income and expenditures of the national legislature and its various committees.”Though, “we want him to be celebrated, we will not rush into judgment, we will continue to remain patient and await the findings of government. Our patience must not be construed as indifference and neglect.”According to them, “We are expecting that a befitting honor will be the collective determination of this nation to bring closure to the questions and mysteries surrounding his death.”“We are also awaiting the autopsy report being fully aware that the uniqueness of this matter will draw the attention of government, the international community and the conclusion of the matter will epitomize government’s commitment to the fight against corruption,” they said. The group added, “We are equally shocked that this government has failed to address the absence of a pathologist (s) in our country.”Expressing special thanks to Atty. Samuel K. Woods, the family and friends of the deceased said, “This matter cannot be ignored …it is a national duty to account for every drop of Michael’s blood.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
