A Former Star College QB Has Died At 48

He was only 48.Michael Payton, a former star college quarterback at Marshall, passed away this morning following a battle with cancer.The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported the unfortunate news:The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, native’s passing was confirmed by his brother, David, on Thursday afternoon.“He went home to be with the Lord and reunited with our Mom,” David Payton said by message. “Blessings.”Payton was one of Marshall’s all-time greats, leading the Herd to its first-ever Division I-AA Championship in 1992.For his efforts, Payton earned the Walter Payton Award in 1992, which is the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) version of the Heisman Trophy. In that season, he threw for 3,610 yards and 31 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions.Payton was one of the best players in program history. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.Rest in peace, Michael.last_img
